The respected music producer, who passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, had battled with a kidney disease for some time before he eventually had a transplant in India in 2013. However, family members and friends of OJB are not happy with the colleagues of the deceased in the entertainment industry.
Vanguard investigation revealed that many of OJB’s close friends and neighbours are bitter, as they accuse the legendary producer’s colleagues of abandoning him to his fate in the last days of his life. According to one of the sympathisers at OJB’s residence who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the entertainment industry is full of fake friends and fake love.
The source alleged that the lion share of the funds raised to foot the bill of OJB’s kidney transplant in India about three years ago, didn’t come from the entertainment industry.
UNN formally shuts down Enugu Campus, suspends SUG
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, (UNN) Enugu Campus has been officially shut down by the school authorities. A statement signed by Prof. Smart N. Uchegbu, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Enugu Campus, Wednesday, announced the immediate and indefinite closure of the university following last Monday’s students’ protests that halted academic activities. The university authorities also suspended the SUG.
How cultists attacked man, pregnant wife in Lagos
Residents of Mebamu community are now living in fear of attacks from rampaging cultists, who are on rampage in the rustic community in the densely-populated Okoko area of Lagos.
A father of three, Steven Boyo, was shot, cut in the throat and fingers.
The suspected cultists attacked the community thrice in one week, terrorising residents and shops owners. Narrating how her husband was attacked, heavily pregnant Ene Boyo, told Vanguard at the hospital are doctors were battling to save his life, that as they were returning home after the day’s business, they heard gunshots at Owoseni Street, “but my husband said it was fireworks and not gunshot.
“I was walking behind my husband when I noticed about 10 boys, all dressed in black, walking behind us; before I could alert him they had surrounded him; I quickly ran into a nearby compound. “Few minutes later, I heard another gunshot, and the cultists shouting Aye o, Aye o, before taking their leave. I thought they had killed my husband. “I ran out after the place was calm only to find my husband lying down in a pool of his blood.
He was shot in the back and stabbed on the neck, with his fingers cut.” Ene Boyo said she quickly rushed him to a private hospital with the assistance of good Samaritans, before reporting at the Okoko Police Station, while the IPO in charge of the case came to the hospital to confirm the incident the following day. Ironically, when contacted, Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Superintendent Dolapo Badmos, said that Okoko Police Division has no case of any Steven Boyo reported and the Divisional Police Officer confirmed that there has been no such case reported in the division.
Jonathan’s former aide, Dudafa arraigned for money laundering
Former Senior Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs to ex- President Goodluck Jonathan, Waripamo-Owei Emmanuel Dudafa and a bank official, Iwejuo Joseph Nna (aka. Taiwo A. Ebenezer and Olugbenga Isaiah) were today Wednesday docked by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC before Justice M.B. Idris of the Federal High Court Lagos on 23-counts of concealment, retention of proceeds of crime and failing to furnish information.
Dudafa is alleged to have laundered over N1, 667,162,800.00 (One billion, six hundred and sixty seven million, one hundred and sixty two thousand, eight hundred Naira) while performing his duties as top aide to the former president, through the accounts of four companies – Ebiwise Resources Limited, Avalon Global Property Development Company Limited, Rotato Inter-Link Services Limited and Pluto Property and Investment Company Limited.
He allegedly received the assistance of the second defendant, Nna, a branch manager of a new generation bank, who was in charge of the said accounts. When the charges were read to the defendants, they pleaded not guilty.
Pistorius to be sentenced on July 6
Oscar Pistorius will be sentenced on July 6, Judge Thokozile Masipa announces on Wednesday. The sentencing proceedings in the South African court had initially been expected to conclude on Friday. In a twist, the judge adjourned the case to July for judgment. Earlier on, the court in Pretoria has been preparing this week to resentence the 29-year-old for the killing of Reeva Steenkamp after an appeals court changed his initial manslaughter conviction into murder.
Pistorius fired four shots at his girlfriend through a locked toilet door at his home in Pretoria in the early hours of February 14, 2013. The 29-year-old model died at the scene.
The Judge, Thokozile Masipa accepted his version that he mistook her for a burglar, and sentenced him to five years.
The verdict was overturned by the Court of Appeal in December and Masipa is now due to review the sentence.
The sentencing proceedings had been expected to conclude on Friday, but Masipa announced she would only make the sentence public on July 6.
During the court session broadcast live by the television channel eNCA, Masipa lifted a ban on the publication of five photos of Steenkamp’s body at the request of prosecutor Gerrie Nel. The ban had been imposed to protect the family.
However, Steenkamp’s father Barry told the court that the photos should be made public to show the world how much she suffered and to prevent such events from happening again.
Dubbed Blade Runner, Pistorius soared to international fame after becoming the first amputee to compete against able-bodied athletes in the 2012 Olympic Games. Pistorius’ lower legs were amputated due to a congenital defect when he was less than one year old.
11 year-old wins 16th Spelling Bee competition
Eleven-year-old, Philip Daniel of Darocha Primary School, Agege, has emerged winner of the 16th Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition, primary category, beating Titus Friday of Anglican Primary School, Ajegunle, and Nafisat Raji of Ahmadiyah Primary School, Yaba, to second and third positions respectively. The competition, which was keenly contested by 57 participants from public primary schools across the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Government Education Authorities, LGEAs, produced five best winners. The winner, Daniel, was presented with N150,000.00 cash prize and trophy, the second and third positions collected N100,000.00 and N75,000.00 cash prizes and trophies, while the other two winners for the fourth and fifth positions were given consolation prizes each. The Executive Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Dr. Ganiyu Shopeyin, in his address, congratulated the winners and all the participants for displaying brilliance and urged them not to rest on their oars. He also commended the teachers who have groomed the pupils for the competition for a job well done, just as he enjoined the pupils to strive more on their studies for academic excellence. Speaking earlier, the permanent secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Adesina Odeyemi, reiterated that the competition is another step taken by the State Government to demonstrate its resolve to further develop Education in Lagos. He added that the competition has been designed to promote the ideals of original thinking and confidence in pupils and students in our educational system.
Central Bank Of Nigeria announces new Flexible Forex regime
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has finally let go of pegs on the naira, allowing the market forces to determine the true value of the local currency against other currencies across the world.
This was disclosed by Godwin Emefiele, governor of the bank, who spoke at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday.
Emefiele said the bank will operate a single trading window, which will take off on June 20, 2016, adding that the CBN will only step in from time to time regulate the market.
Emefiele said the bank will appoint less than a dozen primary dealers who would now be in charge of foreign exchange trading, driving flexibility in the system.
The governor added that the 41 banned items remain banned, and cannot access forex from the new window.
NLC gives banks 14 days to recall sacked workers
The Nigeria Labour Congress has issued a 14-days ultimatum to six banks to recall all sacked workers or face a nationwide industrial action.
The NLC said in a letter to the managements of the six banks, signed by the Deputy General Secretary, Mr. Chris Uyot, on behalf of the President, Mr. Ayuba Wabba, that the congress decided to issue the ultimatum having been informed by the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees that the banks embarked on arbitrary mass sacking of workers without adherence to labour laws.
The banks are Fidelity Bank, Diamond Bank, First City Monument Bank, First Bank, Ecobank and Skye Bank.
The NLC also accused the management of the affected banks of preventing unionisation of workers in spite of efforts to resolve the issue amicably.
Uyot said that the NLC would ensure the closure of all branches of the banks across the country if all sacked workers were not recalled and workers allowed to unionise at the expiration of the ultimatum expected to take effect from June 16, 2016.
Buhari condoles with Ghanian President over mother’s death
President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday spoke on the telephone to President John Mahama of Ghana to extend his condolences to his family on the passing away of his mother, Hajia Abiba Nnaba.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists.
Adesina quoted the President as praying that Allah should grant the soul of Nnaba eternal rest and comfort all who mourn her.
The statement read, “The President told the Ghanaian leader that his personal thoughts and prayers as well as those of Nigerians are with him as he mourns the passage of a beloved mother.
“The President further prayed that the loving memory and virtues which Hajia Abiba Nnaba lived for will continue to inspire all who knew her and generations to come.”
Stephen Jnr and Jennifer Keshi have arrived Nigeria for preparation of their father, Stephen Keshi's burial. The former Super Eagles Coach died in Edo state last week Wednesday June 8th. Stephen Keshi Jnr says they are working with the Federal government, Delta and Edo state government and other well meaning Nigerians to give him a befitting burial. No date has been fixed for his burial.
