Kachikwu Says Fuel Subsidy Stoppage Has Saved $15.4bn

Nigeria has saved $15.4bn as a result of the elimination of subsidy on petroleum products since May this year, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has said. He disclosed this while hosting members of the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum (Downstream) at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday. The lawmakers were at the ministry as part of their oversight functions.

Lagos Presents N813bn Budget for 2017... biggest ever state budget in Nigeria

Lagos State governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday presented the 2017 budget proposal of N813 billion to the House of Assembly, assuring that the budget would be judiciously implemented to continue the infrastructural renewal and the enhancement of Lagos as one of the foremost tourism and investment destination in Africa. Ambode, who tagged the budget “The Golden Jubilee Budget” as it coincides with the State’s 50th Anniversary, said it would focus on physical infrastructure, while social sectors especially health, education, youth and social development would get adequate attention. Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a new “floor plan”, or minimum pricing, for data services by mobile operators “to address market distortions, unhealthy price wars and value erosion that could threaten the going concern of service providers”, this is according to an internal working document. In a letter to the big operators, the NCC had directed that the floor plan for data should be 0.90k/MB effective December 1, 2016 “pending the finalisation of the study on the determination of cost-based pricing for retail broadband and data services in Nigeria”.

A suspected fraudster, Ekperebuike Akadonye, has been arrested by the police for allegedly parading himself as the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on the Internet. The 29yrs old man, who was apprehended by the Inspector-General Special Intelligence Response Team, also allegedly defrauded a Saudi Arabia-based doctor, identified as Hassan Alkahallaf, to the tune of $10,000.

Life Imprisonment? Court Sentences 16 Persons to Life for Adulterating Diesel

A federal high court in Calabar yesterday sentenced 16 persons to life imprisonment for adulterating about 100 tons of petroleum product suspected to be Automotive Gas Oil, also known as diesel. The suspects were arrested on July 7, 2016 by operatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps along the Brass River in Bayelsa while heading towards the sea on a vessel. The names of the 16 convicts are:

Alleged Yahoo Boy Remanded In Prison For $8,000 Fraud

The EFCC has docked one Okwara Victory before Justice I.B Gafai of the Federal High Court Awka, Anambra State, for charges bothering on obtaining by false pretense to the tune of $8,674. When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty on all counts of the three count charge preferred against him by the EFCC. In view of his plea, the Defense Counsel Barr. Emma Onyibor applied for the bail of his client adding that his client had been on administrative bail granted him by the EFCC, and had not defaulted but reported regularly to the EFCC whenever he was needed.

Details are unclear but some reports say there are survivors. The chartered plane, flying from Bolivia, was carrying members of the Chapecoense football team.

A former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, was at the Abuja office of the EFCC on Monday where he was said to have agreed to testify against Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State and his aide, Mr. Abiodun Agbele. A reliable source said, “Senator Obanikoro came to the EFCC office on Monday morning as part of investigations into the N4.7bn. Since he has confessed that he was the one who collected the N4.7bn and distributed it, he is in the best position to testify in court. “The EFCC wants him to testify against Agbele which will also build a strong case against Fayose who currently enjoys immunity. Obanikoro has agreed and will be listed as one of the EFCC witnesses.

Lagos Approves Death Penalty For Kidnappers If Victims Die In Their Captivity

The Lagos State House of Assembly yesterday okayed capital punishment as penalty for kidnappers, if their victims die in captivity. This followed the adoption of a report presented by Mrs Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, Chairman House Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission. Tejuosho presented the report of a Stakeholders meeting on a bill titled: “A Bill for a Law to Provide for the Prohibition of the Act of Kidnapping and for Other Connected Purposes”. NAN reports that the bill was sponsored by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Senate approves Buhari’s request to amend 2016 budget

The Senate has approved President Muhammadu Buhari’s request to amend the 2016 budget by re-assigning N180.8 billion to critical recurrent and capital items. The Senate’s approval followed the presentation of the report of the Committee on Appropriations led by Danjuma Goje on Tuesday.  The year is coming to an end in a few weeks, I guess we should be talking of 2017 budget. 

Nigeria Police Kill Three, Foil Attack On Plane

Three suspected armed robbers were on Monday shot dead by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force during a shootout at the busy UTC Junction in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. One of the hoodlums, who escaped being killed by a special team from Inspector General of Police, said they had planned to attack a plane belonging to a popular airline in the country. It was also learnt that the suspects were forced to stop by the traffic light as they queued behind other vehicles waiting for their turn to get the green light to move. One of the suspects, according to the eyewitness, alighted from the car and opened fire on some policemen at the junction.

A Senior Legislative Assistant with National Assembly, Abubakar Sani Doki, passed on yesterday as he collapsed at the national assembly. Doki, an aide of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yussuf Lasun, was rushed to the national assembly clinic on a wheel chair by his son at about 10:00am on Monday. Sadly, he gave up the ghost an hour later. Doki, a bosom friend of Reps member, Ibrahim Babangida Mahuta, has been sick for sometime but was never hospitalized. The deceased hailed from Bungudu, Zamfara state. He has since been buried according to Muslim rites. RIP!

President Buhari Muhammadu Buhari has dismissed rumours that he and APC leadership are at odds with one of the party's leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, describing such rumours as mischievous. A 52-year-old bus conductor, Segun Awogbemi, who allegedly r*ped his landlady, was on Thursday docked at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. The accused, who lives in Saidatu Street, Oregun in Ikeja, Lagos, is facing a two-count of conspiracy and r*pe. The prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the accused and others at large committed the dastardly act on the innocent woman on October 9 at about 9pm inside her residence.

Some militants were suspected to have lost their lives when troops of Operation Delta Safe bombed a militant camp at Okosugbene Creek, along Burutu-Warri River, near Burutu, Delta State, with two fighter jets and about seven gun boats for nearly an hour on Thursday. Reports from the area said soldiers, who struck at about 6.00 am caught the militants unawares.

The Supreme Court has referred the two factional leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – Ali Modu Sheriff and Ahmed Makarfi – back to the Court of Appeal for the decision on who has the right to lead the party. The court also ordered a former factional candidate of the party in Ondo State, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim, to file a fresh appeal in furtherance of his objection to the decision of the Court of Appeal in favour of Eyitayo Jegede, now the governorship candidate of the PDP.

Suspected cultists have killed a student of the University of Abuja, Onyekachi Azubuko. He was killed behind his parents’ residence off Gado Nasko Way, Kubwa, a satellite town in the FCT. According to Northern City News,  25yrs old Onyekachi was shot dead on Tuesday afternoon shortly after stepping out of the house to meet some friends. His corpse was identified by his brother, Joel, before it was taken to the morgue by the police.
